Thanksgiving has always been one of my favorite holidays. Not because of the great food – and I do enjoy gathering with my family – but most of all because of the spirit of the day – giving thanks. It is very cliché but we do have a lot to be thankful for.

One of the things I am thankful for this year is that there are good leaders.

Here are 3 actions I recently observed in 3 different leaders. All leaders we can be thankful for.

An Apology

A leader forgot to follow-up on something he intended to do. While a bit embarrassed, he openly owned up to the mistake – in front of his entire department – and made sure he followed through on his commitment by the end of the day.

A Desire to be Better

A leader met with me to review her DiSC style – at the request of her employee. She said, “Why wouldn’t I do something that “Joan” said would make us work together better.”

Letting Go

A leader let go of the desire to have something done her way and gave her staff person the freedom to do it his way. She admitted it was hard, but knew it was best for her development. (Did you catch that – best for her development. Good for the employee’s growth too – but she was doing it for herself!)

Pause, take a moment, be truly thankful. And as you lead others – be a leader others are truly thankful for.
